Barre began in the 1950s and provides a low-impact, full body, endurance workout set to music. Exercises are choreographed in short patterns to different songs so the workout moves quickly, providing a challenging cardiovascular foundation. Total Barre™ integrates elements of pilates, dance, cardio and personal training, offering a fresh spin on this workout, designed for everyone – no dance experience required!
What makes Total Barre™ unique? While there are a variety of barre classes starting to pop up, Total Barre™ provides a biomechanically based approach. This means the exercises consider the safest, most effective alignment for your entire body in each exercise.
Adapted from STOTT PILATES® Five Basic Principles, exercises promote awareness of the following in every movement:
Rib Cage Placement & Stabilization
Scapular Movement & Stabilization
Head & Cervical Spine Placement
Hip, Knee, Ankle and Foot Placement
New to barre or pilates? Learning these foundational principles will provide an excellent framework use during personal training exercises at home or in the gym and will inform your yoga practice by adding additional things to consider in every pose.
If the idea of plié squats sounds frivolous or feminine, think again! This workout is not only light, positive and energizing - it's challenging! Barre workouts will build strength, flexibility, balance and endorphins. Plan to feel refreshed & motivated after just one session.
Barre can be practiced easily in-home and corporate settings, as private sessions or small group classes. Try incorporating one song into your personal training session to test it out and see what you think. Stability barres can be mounted to the wall or purchased as free standing pieces of equipment that are easily moved & stored.
Small props such as Flex-Bands®, Free Weights and Mini Stability Balls™ are added to some exercises to increase challenge and add upper body and abdominal components for a well rounded workout.
In-home or office private, duet and small group training classes are available in the Boston area. I have been working with Debra on a weekly basis for the last two years.
